Went to go see sunshine last night with a couple of friends. If you haven’t heard of the movie it’s not surprising because it wasn’t hyped-up as much as Summer movies usually are. In any case the movie is one of the best Sci Fi movies I’ve seen in a while. It takes place 50 years into the future when the Sun in burning out and a team of scientists are on a mission to save humanity. They ride a ship towards the sun carrying a nuclear bomb the size of Manhattan. Their gaol? To detonate the bomb and kick start the suns core again. I walked into this movie just looking for an entartaining Two hours, but actually really got into the movie. The movie does a great job of describing the scinece behind everything happening which is always an important thing for me. An the story about what happens on the journey to the Sun is actually pretty believable.
It’s not like the other big disaster movies where the world is about to end and it’s up to a handful of people to save it. Towards the end of the of the film the story shifts gears, which I should have seen coming, but I still can’t decide if I liked it or not. The ending was a surprise which I also enjoyed.
It’s a very visual movie with some impressive visual effects. i think watching The history Channel’s series on The Universe made this movie more enjoyable for me because it deals with some of the topics touched on by the show. I’m also a fan of Danny Boyle.
I’m sure the fact that I find astronomy interesting and that I’m a sucker for science fiction made me like it even more.
