Art for Art’s Sake

Sep 25th, 2007 by Chris

There’s some drawings at the bottom if you don’t want to read all the crap I wrote.
So today I sat down in front of my computer and started to surf the internet. Visited the usual sites looking for something interesting to steal for my own blog and while nothing decent was showing up I started to think about this site.

This website started out as a project for a web design class. Basically I was posting comics that I was drawing about some of the good times I was having with my roommates while living away from home. Eventually the comic that I printed in my room became a webcomic since the internet was a better method to deliver it. Eventually the site just became a blog where I would update with new comics and my personal artwork.

The blog as it is today is pretty much a front page for Aloof and  a place where I can collect some funny/entertaining/interesting things that I discover online. It’s also a way to share some of the things found on the internet with other individuals.  I look over the last several posts and realize that I’ve been keeping most of my current artwork to myself.

I look over some of my old sketchbooks and see how much my art has changed. I can see where different images were influencing me and how my style changed as a result. To anyone else it’s meaningless, but to me it shows how much I’ve “grown”. That’s the best way I can describe it. I see how I’ve become more experimental and messy with my sketches. Most of my latests drawings feel more free form and less confined than my earlier works. It’s probably because back then I used to constantly imitate artists that I liked, which is natural, but as I look back I realize that I was holding back.

I don’t really regret any of the directions that my art has taken over the years. There is always a learning process involved and art is constantly evolving. I don’t want to get to philosophical or “artsy-fartsy” because I might make myself sick. Point is that I’ve finally accepted what every art teacher was telling me. Although there was never anything wrong with my style of art I wasn’t using my talents to their fullest potential.

Not sure if that makes any sense, but it sounded good in my head.

In anycase I’m going to try and keep this blog updated with daily sketches since I’m trying to keep up with sketching my ideas on a more regular basis. Sketching for an artist is like brainstorming for a writer. It’s amazing how helpful sketching random ideas can help when planning a bigger project.

Fuck, that was a lot of typing.
I’m done now, have some drawings:

Urface Samurguy People Anthem

Recently the Brush Pen has become my favorite drawing tool. It’s harder to control and you can’t get too acurate with the ink strokes, but I have a lot of fun drawing with it. I’ve also been using my Copic market set to add some variety to the usual Black and White drawings.

    Too long didn’t read.
Sorry had to say it. Sounds like a good thought and it does make sense. Good luck!
    I really like the 1st and 3rd sketch…

Deep, I read it all. I like the sketches a lot too. The third is my favorite. It reminds me of the dark girl in the movie you sent us recently. I’m looking forward to the new sketches. God job Chris!!!!
