Here’s something interesting from the wide world of graphic design:
Most people wouldn’t notice this, or maybe they have and don’t fully realize it, but Trajan is the font that has been used and overused by movie studios for pretty much any and all title text. Sure it’s an elegant and simple font with serifs, but a little variety never hurt anyone. It’s actually pretty annoying when you realize how many movies are typeset with the same font. Makes them look way too generic.
I guess I take this a little too seriously, but then again: this is what I do for a living. I work with text and type pretty much all day. I studied for 5 years and there were only a handful of instructors that emphasized how important text was when combined with an image. Sounds boring as shit, but I actually find the design theory behind it very interesting. My view on this sort of thing took a turn after reading The End of Print by David Carson (who was a revolutionary graphic designer) my first semester in college. After that I was 95% sure that I wanted to study graphic design. I still have that 5% that wants to work in illustration simply because I love to draw, but even then I know that my illustrations feel a little empty without a little text thrown into the mix.
