Here’s some stuff from the past couple of days that I never got around to posting. Been doing a lot of figure studies lately (as you may have noticed) and been looking over some old anatomy books I have. In fact, I dedicated most of my Saturday to sketching the human figure and studying different forms. I won’t bore you with the gesture sketches and quick poses (I also don’t feel the urge to scan all those pages >.<) so I’ll keep uploading some selections to keep track of my progress.

Originally I wanted to take a figure drawing class, but decided that I didn’t really have the time for that. Now I’m just doing what I can on my own. Which is still fun!

I’ve also been spending most of my sketchbook time working on some anatomical & form studies from various books that I have an photos I’ve been finding online. Next best thing to a figure drawing class I suppose. I’ve been seriously considering signing up for a figure drawing class just to force myself to draw and study the human figure for those 3 hours every other day. Practice is my best friend right now so we’ll see what happens.

I may post the sketches I’ve been doing here, but they’ve been mostly gestures & blind contours which are basically quick lines & scribbles to “loosen up”. I think it would be good to post them for “documentation” purposes (for myself mainly) so we’ll see how lazy I feel about scanning this week. There’s a lot more work I need to get done.

Been working with markers a lot recently. It’s pretty funny because I used to shun the idea of drawing with markers. Fortunately I’m less of a n00b now than I was then (but still am) and I’ve slowly been amassing a collection of different marker shades to experiment with. Still trying to get the hang of using the different angles of the broad tip shape. I’m certain that the key to mastering this medium, as with pretty much everything else in life, will be in the practice. And that’s what these drawings are: practice. Working out ideas and such.

One thing that I have gotten over which is a big step for me is the “permanent” (permanent-ness?) of the markers. Last year a lot of my work was done with black ink & different inking brushes. I managed to get over the fact that I cannot erase any of the marks I made with that and became very confident in my brush strokes. So I think that’s helping me with the markers. Still, I notice that the blending of colors & overlays adds a new challenge. I think brushing up on my color theory would help immensely here.

In any case, here are some recent sketches from memory. No references were used. More coming when I feel the urge to not be lazy and photograph the work

Today turned out to be a productive day. On top of that, I found some beautiful concept art for the new Judge Dredd movie. And for anyone excited about a sequel to Sly Stallone’s awesomeness (me) needs to put their excitement on hold because this movie is going to be one of those revamps that Hollywood seems so interested in as of late. So it will disregard anything that happened in the first film and create it’s own story based on the comic book character. In any case the little artwork they are showing is great. The illustration style makes my eyes happy.

Personally I’m still very excited about another movie with the Law man himself. I’m kinda thirsty for some good sci-fi movies in general. There seems to be a lack of them recently. That’s one of the reasons Wall-E appealed to me even more. Needless to say that I am waiting for the new Star Trek movie with feverish anticipation.

I used to think these types of excercises were a waste of my time when an art instructor would make us do this. However now I look back and see a new opening for something creative by doing this. Basically what you do is have someone scribble on a piece of paper and then you finish the drawing by adding to their random linework.

I tried something like this my first semester in college with another student. Only we didn’t use the scribble method, instead we would each take turns adding elements to a “collaborative image” that we agreed to work on. Ever since then I’ve wanted to do something like that again, but most of my peers liked working alone.

Ah well, someday I’ll collaborate with a creative partner again.

In any case this was one of the first posters to make an appearance at comic con.
